How to Buy a Musical Keyboard

October 31st, 2009 by ama

A musical keyboard is a musical instrument that has a set of adjacent keys that produce scales of notes. All the twelve notes of the western music can be generated using the keys of the keyboard by pressing the keys for larger or shorter durations which produces various kinds of tones. On a keyboard, pressing a key will connect it to a circuit that is responsible for producing a tone.

The twelve notes of the western music are placed with the lower note on the left and the larger keys just forward. These keys are often white in color and so are known as white notes or white keys. The rest of the keys which are not a part of the C scale are set black, hence known as black keys. Different kinds of keyboards also demand diferrent set of techniques to play them.

The volume of the note is dictated by the movement of the air along the stops which are selected by the player. Even though the keyboard looks to be quite simple but playing it can prove out to be a challenging task. The fingers operating the keys are often pressing keys independently of each other, producing loud or soft sounds as needed.

A person who is likely to buy the keyboard in Singapore for the first time must take his time to choose the keyboard which he really likes. One should buy a keyboard which when played sends the signal directly to the brain. A really good musical keyboard is capable of producing better sounding, multi-instrument songs. Always test the keyboard before buying it.

Check if all the keys work properly. Keyboards are generally like any gadget, they get obsolete with time, so refrain from buying outdated keyboards. Normally, the keyboard model that a person is setting his sights on costs more than his budget. If this is the case then a compromise should be reached where you sacrifice a few of the flooks and features that you like in exchange for a more affordable price. A beginner should always buy a musical keyboard which is not very expensive because right now the beginner is just in the learning phase.

Several other factors which need to be considered before you buy the keyboard involve the cost, number of keys in it, maintenance, portability, styles, etc. A keyboard with minimum number of 61 keys is what you should look for so that you can play a wide range of songs on it. But if you are interested in classical music, then you should opt for the keyboard with 88 keys. The keys of the keyboard should be lighter making it ideal for beginners. Keys can be made to feel weighted like a piano but they are generally more expensive. Always test for touch sensitivity of the keys. The response of the keys when you lightly press them should be a soft sound while a heavier press on the keys should produce a louder sound.

Make sure the keyboard which you are buying can be upgraded with time. Sequencer is a good feature to have in the keyboard because it helps in practicing songs with it. Once you have evaluated these different features, you can now buy the instrument of your choice from your local music store or through the internet.

How to Tune a Ukulele

October 31st, 2009 by ama

Ukulele is associated with Hawaii which is a kind of small guitar made up of four strings. The ukulele is strummed like a guitar with top to bottom tuning. It has four classic types called the soprano, the concert, also called alto, the tenor, and the baritone.

The ukulele beginners usually start with the soprano type since it is not so costly and is also easy to play, while the experienced ones who know how to play a guitar generally play baritone type. Baritone type of ukulele is made for experts and costs for a few thousand dollars. Ukuleles in Singapore which are made of low quality wood are generally low in cost while some other ukuleles which are made of high quality of wood are costlier. Ukulele has a shape as that of a guitar but can have some variable shapes also which include oval shaped, boat shaped, etc.

The standard tuning which is used in soprano, concert, and tenor ukuleles is known as C-tuning which is tuned to g’c’e’a while the baritone type of ukuleles is tunes to d’g’b’e which flows from low to high. Another common tuning used in sopranos and concerts is D-tuning which is tuned as a’d’f#’b’. This tuning is generally higher than that of C-tuning. D-tuning will make the smaller ukuleles sound sweeter.

For a beginner ukulele player, tuning the ukulele can be a difficult task to do but practicing more of it makes it quite easier. The music that comes out of the ukulele will only be good if it is properly tuned. The better tuned your ukulele is the more pleasant music it will produce. The tuning of a ukulele can prove to be fun especially to children, and it can get them interested in music. Some steps which can be followed for proper tuning of your ukulele include:

  • For tuning the ukulele you have to use an instrument which acts as a reference point and a piano or a guitar serves this purpose.
  • Press the lower G on your ukulele and rotate the button corresponding to that until you are able to match your ukuleles tone with the reference tone
  • In the same manner, also tune the other three strings. Simply play the reference tone until your string tone is matched to it.
  • When tuning the ukulele strings against themselves, press the fifth fret of the low G string and see if that matches the C string. If not, turn the tuning button of the C string until it sounds like the G string at fifth fret.
  • The E string should match the fourth fret of the C string. If not, adjust the E string until they match.
  • Verification for the A string can be done by playing the E string at the fifth fret. Make the necessary adjustments you have to tune them.

Tuning should be done properly and with great care else you will make your ukulele get damaged. If you do not feel confident to tune the ukulele, as a beginner, ask somebody else who has more experience to do it for you.

Tips For Selecting A Flute Teacher

October 31st, 2009 by ama

If you are serious about learning how to play the flute, then it becomes essential to find the perfect teacher who will instruct you in all the important aspects. To find a flute teacher in Singapore is a bit daunting. But now it is very easy to find a perfect flute teacher in Singapore. All that is required of you is to heed the tips outlined below.

  • You first need to develop an abstract idea about the teacher you aspire for. You have to list down a reasonable set of qualifications that you require your flute instructor to possess. Oftentimes, the process of searching for a teacher takes on an adventurous turn. This can be done by seeking the names of the flute teachers and selecting the candidates from your colleagues, your musical neighbors or from your relatives. Other ways could be by browsing the internet or the yellow pages. You could also inquire in music stores for they sometimes offer tutorial services.
  • If flute is the only instrument that you want to learn then make sure that you identify a flute specialist only. There are those teachers that have various numerous specialties for e.g. all types of woodwind instruments. They will be more appropriate for students who are aiming to learn other instruments, too.
  • Also included in the search for the perfect teacher is the process of identifying the goals that the students hope to attain for themselves. This means they should know what is their aim and why do they want to learn. The main reasons can be to get a promotion or a higher chair; to win competitions; for some kind of audition prep; or just for the sheer enjoyment.
  • Next important step is to determine the commitment level and your seriousness for the practicing. You should try to devote as much as time you can give to your practice sessions. Lots of practice are always needed for learning any musical instrument that is new to you.
  • Having laid the foundation of your goals and ambition, you will now have to know your level of proficiency. The qualifications of the instructor that you choose will also be dictated by your level of learning - whether you are an upper beginner, advanced or an intermediate learner.

A student who thrives in structured and high learning environment can do better with a perfect flute teacher in Singapore. This is because the teachers develop a lesson plan for the whole class and give the same practical assignments to everyone. A flute teacher plays an essential part in inspiring interest and passion for the instrument among his students by means of cleverly designed lessons that answer to specific needs of the students. Teachers impart new learning styles to their students.

Most of the flute teachers teach their students how to play flute using the Suzuki method. The Suzuki method of learning will rely more on the students’ hearing abilities to learn a piece of music. At the start of the lessons, you will naturally not be required to be able to read and play musical notations.

  • Before choosing a flute teacher in Singapore, conducting a performance survey from among the students currently studying under a candidate teacher will be a great help in determining the suitability and competence of that teacher.
  • Next, it is important that you know whether the teacher encourages and put their students for the competitions.
