Reasons Why You Should Play the Piano

March 31st, 2009 by ama

there is more than a few advantages in learning to play an instrument.  The piano is a definite favorite, but why is it so popular?  It takes a lot of talent to play the piano well, and in almost every musical genre there are the greats that take the stage and prove this is not a simple, ordinary instrument.

Fans of jazz music will have certainly heard of the mainstream greats, like Count Basie and Duke Ellington, alongside modern geniuses taking the latest charts by storm, like Jim Brickman, the artist of original piano pieces that make it onto major “smooth jazz” radio stations internationally, as well as the more popular inspiration, pop and new age stations.  And of course, don’t forget the famous rock pianists worldwide, including Paul McCartney, Carole King, Carly Simon, Elton John and Billy Joel.

There are also a lot of classic and modern rock bands out there, and some of the best ones have included a fifth member on keyboards.  The front man for the band “Styx”, Dennis DeYoung has to be one of the more popular keyboardists.  Other exceptional artists include Tony Banks from Genesis, Rick Wakeman from Yes, and David Sancious, who has famously played alongside Carlos Santana, Sting and Bruce Springsteen.

Learning to play the piano can certainly increase your knowledge of music to encompass different styles of music, including classical.  It may not currently be your desire to learn this style of music, but you’ll probably end up enjoying it as you begin to expand your piano playing to pieces by greats like Schubert, Mandelssohn, Bach, Beethoven, Brahms and Mozart.  The more you hear the individual works from the previously mentioned artists, the more temptation there is to try and emulate them.  This will certainly impress your family and friends, and even yourself after your hard work rewards you.  Once you get better at the piano, you could land a job in a band or as a solo act.  Being a professional performer can benefit you personally or financially.  Naturally, not every piano player ends up in a high paying job, but if it’s something you love to do, it’s certainly worth striving for.

Learning to Play the Piano Today can benefit you in other ways too.

The piano can help you to release your tensions from a busy day, or clear your mind from a stressful situation.  Even when you feel sad, playing the piano can make you feel better as you focus your mind on the music and the sounds you are creating.  The other thing is that piano playing can enhance self-discipline.  It is an activity that requires daily concentration, and the rewards can be tremendous.  This keeps you motivated to work harder toward goals in all aspects of your life.

So if you are still not convinced why you should play the piano, there are a few more reasons. First, it is way easier to learn piano than becoming a vocalist, as you never have to think about not being at the right pitch. Unless of course the piano isn’t in tune! One quick trip to the piano tuner, and problem fixed!.  Wind instruments require reeds or mouthpieces and guitars require daily tuning and frequent string replacements.  With the piano all you need is yourself and your fingers, warmed up, ready to play!  Finally, the most important reason why you should play the piano is your own personal fulfillment.  The amazing feeling can be awesome after playing a composition to the best of your ability.  Bringing music into your life will surely make you a stronger, more energetic person in your mind, body, and soul.
